The people believe in a "conspiracy theory" that a mysterious organization is manipulating Bielefeld's problem of existence.



This organization tried to spread news to people that the city did not exist, with illegal purposes. Some believe this is a joke thrown out by foreign intelligence organizations.
In August 2019, the city government announced to award a prize worth one million euros to anyone who can prove the above. This action is to erase a notion that has been ingrained in the German mind for 25 years.
The Bielefeld government said people can give any evidence and pictures that this place does not exist. But they can confidently reject 99.99% of those assumptions. To make the competition fair, they are willing to ask experts to intervene and point out the evidence of this non-existence.

Although always being "reputed" for being bogus, people and local authorities are quite optimistic about this. In 2014, the mayor of the city at that time, Pit Clausen, hoped that the "biggest joke in Germany" would become a highlight, attracting tourists to visit.
