The frozen portion of the Yellow River in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (northern China) reached 559.9 km, according to the local government on January 3. Ice jams can lead to local flooding. The melting ice will release large amounts of water and could cause unexpected malfunctions, damaging nearby structures, cropland and downstream wildlife.
In March 2014, the Chinese military deployed bombs on the frozen remote area of the Yellow River to clear the flow. Authorities worried that when the weather was warmer, the ice would melt and potentially flooding, so decided to take this proactive measure.
With a length of 5,464 km, the Yellow River is the second longest river in Asia and the 6th in the world. The river originates in Qinghai province and flows through 9 provinces and autonomous regions in western, central, northern and eastern China. Yellow River basin is the cradle of ancient civilization, the most prosperous region in early Chinese history.
