Until 1960, the first road was constructed in Bhutan. Before that, the only way to get around Bhutan was to use the footpath and follow the trails through breathtaking mountain views. Since 1,500 kilometers of road were built, drivers have had more fun every day thanks to the funny signs. They are part of Project Dantak, funded by the Government of India's BRO Organization

. This organization has supported Bhutan to modernize for more than half a century, through construction and development projects.

Signs are usually written in English, sometimes even Bhutanese Dzhongkha and are hand drawn They have no accents but are easy to remember due to their brevity.




Along winding mountain roads, to warn of slowdowns, people use rhymes like: “Going faster will see disaster” or “On the bend, go slow friend "(Come around the corner, slow me down)," Don't hurry, be cool, since heaven is already full "(Don't hurry, stay calm because heaven is tight).
The Dantak project also had a number of signs reminding drivers to remember their loved ones who abide by the speed limit: “Life is a journey, complete it.” let's go for all) or "Time is money but life is precious" (Time is money but life is precious).

The road from Thimphu to the old capital of Punakha passes one of the most beautiful stops in the world at Dochula Pass. But for all motorists in Bhutan, "mountains are only beautiful when driven carefully".

The capital Thimpu is the only place in Bhutan with a traffic light, but after 24 hours it was removed. Replaced by a traffic policeman standing in the middle of a busy street, wearing white gloves and regulating vehicles with hand movements.
Over the years, the Border Road Organization has built and maintained roads in India's neighboring countries including Afghanistan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Today, they mainly employ local laborers, but historically many Indians undertook this difficult and dangerous job. Their sense of humor challenges difficult circumstances, which are evident on the signs and mission accomplished.
