51,000 works are located in the Van Cuong cave complex (Yungang). This is one of the three most famous cave populations in China, located about 16 km from Dai Dong city, Shanxi. Stretching one kilometer along the mountainside from east to west, Van Cuong includes 252 caves and rock holes. The carved area is 18 square kilometers in total

Currently, there are 45 main caves open to visitors. All are numbered from east to west. The majority (number 1-4) and the central part (5-20) are home to the most beautiful and pristine caves. In the western region are mainly small caves and niches. In total, there are 33 caves telling the life story of Shakyamuni, from his birth until he became Buddha. Caves 16 to 20 were built first of the population (around 460 - 470), under the direction of monk Tan Yao.
