With only about 100 residents, Huacachina welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year. News of this desert green oasis only began to spread as far back as the 1940s, when a wealthy spa claimed water in its lagoon could heal illnesses. However, in the 50s, Huacachina suddenly faded and abandoned for decades.
It was not until the 90s that curious tourists flocked to this beautiful oasis. Tour companies started organizing off-road driving trips, sand skiing .

By the early 2000s, rampant wells threatened the water resources of Huacachina. To compensate for this loss and preserve the heritage, local businesses began pumping water into the lake. However, the lake in the oasis is increasingly polluted due to the development of the surrounding infrastructure.
Since 2010, Marino Morikawa, a Japanese-born Peruvian scientist, successfully researched nanotechnology to revive Huacachina's Lake El Cascajo - where he used to spend his childhood fishing.




In six months, Marino developed a micro-nano foaming system and biofilter to clean the oasis's entire lagoon area. By 2014, after the efforts of Marino et al., 40 bird species have migrated to El Cascajo, 10 species of fish reproduce again in the lake.

Today, visitors to the Huacachina oasis can paddle on the lake in the middle of the oasis, ride the terrain vehicle to explore the surrounding sand dunes for $ 50 per hour, play sandboarding, or watch the sunset glow from the desert cornea.
