Bamboo Forest – The Place Associated With The Great Invention Of Edison
Few doubt that the special connection between Edison and Yawata city, Kyoto is the bamboo trees on the top of Mount Otokoyama.

Incandescent light bulbs, perfect invention by Thomas Edison, help illuminate homes around the world. He received respect from all over, but especially the people of Japan. According to Plain Dealer, the Japanese accounted for the largest percentage of visitors to Edison's childhood home in Milan, Ohio (USA).

In 1878, Edison began to study and experiment with incandescent light bulbs. The principle of the lamp works is to use electricity to burn a thin strip of material, also known as a filament, hot enough to glow. Many inventors have tried to perfect the incandescent lamps, but they have an extremely short lifespan. Other materials are too expensive to use on a commercial scale. Finding a good material for the filament bulb was a big challenge that Edison himself overcame.
Edison sought a material with great resistance and high melting point to prolong the life of the filament
He decided to try and make a filament out of carbonized cotton, and the light bulb lit up for 14 hours, setting the record at that time. Edison quickly applied for a patent, which described carbon fiber that can be made from many different materials such as cotton, flax, wood, paper ... rolled in many different ways.
Edison persistently experimented with carbonized organic materials in his lab. He contacted biologists and asked them to send different types of plant fibers from the tropics. He also sends workers around the world in search of the perfect material.
Edison estimates that he has done experiments with more than 6,000 types of vegetables.
William H. Moore, a worker of Edison, sent him a specimen taken from a bamboo forest near Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine in Kyoto in 1880. The bamboo is native to China and Japan, the hollow body is used as a flute, crafting works of art or crafts. Edison saw a bamboo fishing rod during a trip in Wyoming (USA) two years earlier. The scientist discovered that the fiber from bamboo after carbonization is the most wonderful material for making filament bulbs.

To create these strands, the bamboo stem is split into ultra-thin and curved strands like hairpins or rings. They are coated with carbon powder and heated in a high temperature oven for several hours and allowed to cool. In this process, the bamboo fibers will change from the cellulose structure to the pure carbon structure, ready to be attached to the glass bulb.
Due to the limited length of the filament, the bulbs were not much brighter than candles, but they could burn for a longer time regardless of the filament of any other material at the time. Some of Edison's light bulbs tested could burn for more than 1,200 hours. Carbon filament lamps were popular until two Hungarian scientists, Alexander Friedrich Just and Franjo Hanaman, successfully studied tungsten filament in 1904. In 1911, Edison's General Electric company switched to tungsten.

Edison died in 1931. Three years later, a memorial to Thomas Alva Edison was built in the grounds of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. In 1964, Madeleine Edison Sloane, daughter of Edison, had the opportunity to visit this place. She was deeply moved to see the memorial of her father and confirmed that there is no such monument in America.
Every year, on the anniversary of Edison's birth and death (February 11, 1847-18, October 1931), the light festival takes place at Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. Traditional bamboo lanterns will light up the monument and the American national anthem is played.
