Aurora hunting became a fixed target on my to-do list the first time I saw this overexposed photo on a website.

What is aurorae?
Before starting my aurora hunt in Sweden, I wanted to understand exactly what I was looking for in the northern night sky.

The characteristic colors of the auroras depend on how much the reaction occurs with the gas that the electron is touched. For example, if an electron touches oxygen, the auroras are blue and red. If you touch nitrogen, you will see a blue light.
Abisko, the perfect aurora hunting spot
200 km north of the Arctic Circle, Abisko is a national park in the province of Lapland, Kiruna, in northern Sweden. It is a familiar destination for Swedish late winter skiing and summer hiking
Because of the surrounding hilly terrain, Abisko is also the most obvious night aurora.

I was fortunate to meet Chad and Linnea Blakley, the couple who helped make Abisko a famous aurora viewing destination.
In 2018, Abisko is a little-known place. After Blakley's aurora photos went viral online in 2010, more people have come to this place. Abisko gradually became the top aurora hunting spot in the world.
Coming to Abisko, you will be dressed in puffed overalls and insulated boots, walking along a street without traffic lights, taking photos, posing alongside locals, snow white and husky dogs.
The auroras are one of the reasons many tourists come here in winter.
According to Louise Johansson, a motel worker told me if a few years before summer often attracted more tourists, the current is completely the opposite.



Particularly in January 2018, the guesthouse welcomed visitors with 42 different nationalities.
Here, the Aurora Sky station is the ideal destination to observe auroras. You will admire the beautiful scenery on the two-seat elevator built in 1966.
“Tonight, the aurora can be clouded,” Mr. Blakley reminded me to review the evening weather forecast prior to my trip to Aurora Sky.
"I bet $ 1 that you would still see aurorae if you were out there at night," added Blakley.
On top of Mount Nuolja, the Aurora Sky station offers an impressive view. Below, the town appeared sparkling in the valley, next to the lake as black as coal.

Ice fishing is one of the winter activities in Northern Sweden.
A few aurora hunters eagerly sat by the camera leg buried in the snow. Meanwhile, others look for warmer places in huts or cafes.
I lay on my back in the snow, staring, lifeless for hours on gray clouds.
The hunt for the northern light felt like a farce.
Kiruna and memorable experiences
Because the auroras are elusive, visitors often combine night-time activities that last for hours.
Around Kiruna in northern Sweden, you will indulge in traditional winter pastimes.
