The Island Forbids The Road, Built A Bridge To Make A Path For Millions Of Crabs
The annual rainy season, a series of roads on Christmas Island (Australia) limit the means for the giant crabs to migrate.
Christmas Island, a forbidden island, built a bridge for millions of crabs
Christmas Island in the territory of Australia is located off the Indian Ocean. The island is considered as a tropical paradise with diverse topography such as waterfalls, forests, coastlines ..
The end of October marks the start of the rainy season on the island, which is also the start of the breeding season for nearly 50 million red crabs

The Christmas Island authorities and residents find ways to avoid harming the crabs. They built tunnels and overpasses over the highway to make sure the crabs were safe. The red crab is a key species, playing a central role in the island's ecosystem. The life of plants and animals and people here will be turned upside down if this crab species disappears. During peak migration, some roads on the island are closed or vehicles are restricted to make way for crab flocks.
The killing or eating of crabs on the island is prohibited, with some locals saying they are bland and not suitable for eating. Zainal Abdul Majid, an islander, said: "Every time the rainy season comes, we always have to close all doors to prevent crabs from entering the house." Photo: Lazerhorse.
Tourists liken the sight of millions of crabs crossing the street like red carpet moving. Margaret Watts, an Australian scientist who comes to the island every year to travel and research, finds this migration very attractive. She wondered how the crabs that lived in the woods knew when there was the right tide to reach the shore. The crushed crabs on the street gave off a pretty bad smell, Margaret said. Just like Zainal, she had to keep her doors closed to avoid the nuisance of crabs looking for food or dying in her home.

The breeding period of the red crab is closely related to the moon phase and tides. After burrowing at the coast, the male crabs will mate and return to the island first. The female crabs stay on the beach to hatch eggs for about two weeks before returning to the jungle. Photo: Justin Gilligan.
The young crab is only about 5 mm long. The eggs hatch into millions of crab larvae as soon as they come into contact with seawater, a portion of which becomes food for fish. The giant whale shark often comes to the island in search of crab breeding season food.

After only 2-3 days, the young crabs also find their way back to the mainland like their parents. The crabs take 3 to 4 years to reach mating age, and the journey to find the sea continues as a cycle of nature. Photo: Parks Australia. Millions of young crabs migrate to the mainland. Video: Lennyt.
In addition to the migration of crabs, tourists to Christmas Island have many other sightseeing options.
