In the Dodauer forest in the town of Eutin, in northern Germany, there is a 500-year oak tree named Der Brautigamseiche (Bride and Groom's Oak). Many people have come to the tree trunk letters, hoping to find their own half. The tree also has a postal address for people far away to send mail to. It could be Marie from Brandenburg (Germany), who wants to find a man who can dance; Heinrich from Saxony (France) wishes to have a boyfriend who shares the same interest in traveling; or Liu, who just needs to know if there are any German girls who want to befriend a Chinese person
Karl-Heinz Martens, 72 years old, has been the postman who has left on the oak tree for the past 20 years.



“There is something magical and romantic about this oak tree. On the Internet, people are matched by questions. But the matchmaking oak creates a beautiful coincidence - like fate, ”Mr. Martens said.
Despite his retirement, Mr. Martens keeps a scrapbook filled with photos, letters and newspaper clippings from 1984, when he became the messenger of love. During his two decades of “working” with oak, Mr Martens delivered letters from all over the world, including in a language he could not understand.

In 1890, a local girl named Minna fell in love with Wilhelm, the guy who made chocolate. Minna's father forbade them to meet. Therefore, the couple must secretly exchange letters with handwritten letters placed in a small hole in the oak trunk. It wasn't until a year later that Minna's father allowed the two to marry, and the wedding was held under this particular tree.
Fairy tales in the middle of normal life soon spread everywhere.



From there, singles and romances across Germany began to write love letters and lay them on the Bride and Groom oak tree. The tree received so much mail that in 1927 the German postal service, Deutsche Post, gave the oak a postal code and had its own postman. A ladder is also made to go up to the baby mailbox with a fist, to make it accessible to anyone who opens and reads letters. The only rule is that if you open a letter without wanting to reply, you have to put it back on for later arrivals.
Martin Grundler, spokesman for Deutsche Post, said: “The tree receives about 1,000 letters a year. Most mail comes in the summer. I think that is the time when people want to find love the most.
For girls who already have someone in their dreams, there is a legend that she only needs to walk three times around the tree on a full moon night, thinking about the boy, she will get married that year.




In 1958, young soldier Peter Pump went to the oak root, read a few letters and decided to answer the girl named Marita. The two corresponded for a year before he mustered up the courage to see her. They got married in 1961 and are preparing to celebrate their 57th wedding.

Another fairy tale is that, in 1988, Martens transferred to the oak tree a letter from 19-year-old Claudia, from East Germany. Friedrich Christiansen, a farmer in West Germany, found the letter and replied. After that, despite being divided between the two regions, they continued to love and write letters for 2 years.



After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, they met and got married in May of that year.

In 1989, on a program of a German television station, a reporter asked Martens if Marten had ever found a lover through oak. He shared, I have not had that lucky chance. A few days later, Martens suddenly noticed a letter called Renate to the postman of the tree: “I really want to see you. You are my role model.



Now I am lonely ". Martens shyly recounted, showing a photo of him kissing his wife on his wedding day in 1994.
In 2009, after more than 100 years of being a human matchmaker, the Bride and Groom was married to a 200-year chestnut tree near Dusseldorf growing more than 500 km away. But only 6 years later, the chestnut tree died of old age, leaving the oak tree alone.
