During my exploration of Japan, I chose a gentle local tour around Lake Toya, Hokkaido. However, the most memorable experience that day was climbing Usu, one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on Hokkaido.

The last time the mountain erupted was in 2000. Both Mount Usu and Mount Showa-shinzan are the main tourist attractions in Shikotsu-Toya National Park.
A cable car on Mount Usu gives people a view of Showa-shinzan, another young mountain with the recognizable feature of the earth-red peak. To climb up and see Mount Usu, you need to travel by Usuzan Ropeway.
The station's observation deck offers panoramic views of Lake Toya and the neighboring Showa-shinzan mountain. From a second observatory a short walk away, you can see the ocean and the largest crater of Mount Usu, formed during an eruption in 1977.

I went up to Usuzan Ropeway and got to the first stop in almost 10 minutes. From inside Usuzan Ropeway, I watched the mountain Showa-shinzan in the distance, immersed in the July sun.
Arriving at station 1, I walked a bit more to the observation area. The road is relatively long but not too difficult. Just 5 minutes, I arrived at the observatory crowded with tourists enjoying my summer day.
The majestic view of the mountains appeared at noon. It is much hotter than the normal temperature in Hokkaido.



The way back was a pain because everyone and I had to run fast and climb steep. I gasped because I thought it would not be in time.
But my whole climb seemed to be worth it to be able to enjoy this majestic mountain and beautiful Hokkaido in the middle of the summer. Many people say autumn this place is also very beautiful and cool. That's why, I'll be back soon since I always put Japan in my heart.
