The Mystery Of Rivers With 1,000 Stones Carved Linga
The "precious" carvings on the banks of the Shalmala River are one of the most popular destinations in India or Cambodia.
The mystery of the rivers with 1,000 Linga rocks carved in India
Sahasralinga is a pilgrimage site in Sirsi Taluk, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka state, India. From time immemorial this place has brought wild and mysterious beauty. The Shalmala line is more famous today when more than 1,000 stone carved Linga - symbolizing prosperity - on the riverbank was discovered. In Sanskrit, Sahasralinga also means "thousand Linga", according to Ancient Pages

Historians believe that these Linga were created under Sadashiva Raya (or King Sirsi) of the Vijayanagar Kingdom of southern India, during the period 1678-1718.
A local legend has it that Sahasralinga was created by king's order based on the belief that it would help him stay in the permanent position.
A similar place was found in Cambodia located 25 kilometers from Angkor Watt. It is called as Kbal Spean, meaning "Head Bridge" (Head Brigde). However, although there are many Linga sculptures located all over the riverbed, tourists come here mainly out of curiosity, not for spiritual purposes.
Kbal Spean was discovered in 1968 by the French ethnologist Jean Boulbet. However, his research was interrupted because the Cambodian civil war left the area destabilized for about 20 years.
When Boulbet died in 2007, his family scattered his ashes into the riverbed according to this ethnographer's wishes
No one knows who these sculptures were created by and for what purpose. The locals believe that these Linga are symbols of creative energy; when river water flows through them, it will make the rice fields more fertile. Although many symbols of Hindu culture were destroyed during the war, it is the dense forests around this area that have preserved intact works of mystery. One of the most notable sculptures is the Maha Vishnu and Brahma sculptures.
"The idea that Linga merely represents the penis is completely wrong," said Swami Sivananda, a teacher of Hindu, Yoga and Vedic cultures.
In Sanskrit, Linga means a sign or a symbol. Shiva Linga is a symbol of Shiva in Hinduism, used for worship in temples. In traditional Indian society, Linga is considered a symbol of the energy and potential of Shiva.

The ancient scripture Linga Purana states that the ultimate Linga has no smell, color, or flavor but is called "Prakriti", meaning nature. During the post-Vedic period, Linga became a symbol of Shiva's reproductive power. Linga is also understood as an egg, representing "Brahmanda", meaning "Egg of the Universe".
