St Paul's Church was built in 1580 but then met two fires in 1595 and in 1601, prompting the Jesuits to rebuild it. The original marble wall was enlarged and the facade of the church was carved by Japanese Christians between 1620 and 1627. After the third fire occurred in 1835, this church was not allowed. It was built again and only remains the facade with the present-day stone structure, becoming a tourist attraction to Macau.
The surviving facade of the church consists of four architectural floors, is a massive sculpture with statues of God, angels and demons, Chinese dragons, Japanese chrysanthemums and Portuguese boats. .
The facade was consolidated in the 1990s with pillars made of concrete and steel.
A steel staircase was erected at the back of the cathedral's facade so visitors can go up to see the rock sculptures and take in panoramic views of the city.
