Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world (31,722km² wide, 744,4m deep on average).
This lake used to be a depression 7,000m deep and filled with sediment for 25-30 million years, so it is one of the oldest lakes in geological history.
