These 10 elements are all rare, and very difficult to separate. It took many years, chemists and scientists were able to study and find them all. Four of the ten elements are named after the village, Yttrium (Y), Erbium (Er), Terbium (Tb) and Yttebium (Yb).
Ytterby started to be the "star" for scientists since 1787, when military lieutenant and researcher Carl Axel Arrhenius discovered strange black ore in an old quarry near the village Arrhenius named the new ore Ytterbite and sent the sample to other chemists for analysis.

The first person to find the rare earth element in the sample Arrhenius sent was the Finnish chemist, Johan Gadolin. It was in 1789. This element was named Yttrium (Y). Over the next 100 years, nine other elements were found in the mine.
Yttrium (Y) has important applications in LEDs and phosphors, especially red phosphors in cathode ray tube displays. Yttrium is also used in the manufacture of electrodes, electrolytes, electronic filters, lasers, superconductors, and many other medical applications.
