Miyama Thatched Roof Village, Ancient Japanese Beauty

From Kyoto Station, we boarded the train to Hiyoshi Station and took the bus to Miyama Village. Even though it was Sunday, it was sunny and chilly, but Miyama was still quite deserted. Walking down the bus station, everyone was amazed by the strangely calm serenity of the old village, far from the bustling bustle and crowds of tourists of Kyoto. We arrived at Miyama just as the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and the whole village appeared beautifully in a mixture of the colors of the mountains and flowers

. A secluded village in the mountains 50 kilometers north of central Kyoto, Miyama is entirely surrounded by an arc of mountains about 1,000 meters high. The best way to reach this village is a mountain trail, through thick forests - a habitat for black bears. It is that special geographical location that has helped Miyama people have bold traditions of living and community values
Although it is only a 80-minute drive from Kyoto to Miyama today, the traditions and community values from ancient times are still intact.

Myama is famous for its signature thatched roof houses. exists as an important cultural heritage of Japan. There are still many houses in the village that were built in the mid to late Edo period (1603-1868). Walking around the village, visitors can enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking views of thatched roofs against the backdrop of the mountains. Hundred-year-old thatched roofs are made up of many small villages scattered around the foothills. Most of the houses here are surrounded by gardens, mainly the elderly living on farming. We did not see any figures of young people or children in the village
One of the houses open to visitors is the Sato Ethnographic Museum - a showcase of traditional tools and everyday household items from decades, as well as some pictures of construction and maintain thatched roof.

Not far from the Sato Museum is the Indigo Little Museum - a cottage that has been converted into a library. Unlike most other areas in Japan, visitors will not find a supermarket or convenience store here. Most of the people grow rice and vegetables. The rare places we could shop were a few souvenir shops in tourist car parks selling mushrooms and fruits, handicrafts. In addition the village has only a small cafe, a few eateries and a bakery. The bread here is very delicious, using familiar ingredients such as red beans, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and chocolate to make the filling. Note, visitors should buy bread early as the shop runs out of cakes very quickly and barely produces more until the next day. This is also one of the best curry udon I've ever eaten in Japan, the curry is thick and rich, not as thin as in some inner Kyoto eateries. The features in Miyama are that every home grows a lot of flowers: suisen, tulips, bell orchids, blue bell flowers. If you come to Miyama in late September and early October, visitors will admire the field of buckwheat flowers (also the triangular flowers in northern Vietnam) stretching immensely. So beautiful and peaceful, we feel like every smallest detail of the village makes the whole group admire the admiration: each small cluster of wildflowers growing on the village road or gardens filled with vibrant colors of famous flowers, bundles of stacked and neatly arranged straw, layers of green moss-covered thatched roofs so thick that I was curious whether the roof was really made of paintings or of moss, winding village streets Windy, extremely clean. Moss on the leaf roof Many visitors sit on the road to enjoy the feeling of fully merging with the natural scenery here. The space was quiet, with a glimpse of the peasants in the garden and some tourists walking around the village, but absolutely no laughs heard. It seems that everyone just softly whispered to talk and greet each other, so all we heard were only birds in the mountains and rustling of leaves.
