According to local people, red banyan tree, also known as polypropylene (scientific name Ficus elastica) is planted on both sides of the bank When the tree grows to maturity in about 15-30 years, it creates a firmly drooping root system.




During this time, the Khasi threaded the roots of the plants through the temporarily installed bamboo truss to fix the roots. Over time, the roots grow and stick together, forming unique 'living bridges' with a length of 4.5 - 75m and can withstand the load of 35 people each time. pass.
The structure 'tree root material' does not have to cost as much construction as reinforced concrete. They are stable over time and can last for centuries. They withstand storms and flash floods that typically occur in the rainy season in the area, helping to connect remote villages scattered across the rugged Meghalaya terrain
The original origins of the human know how to use the roots of the tree to make the suspension bridge are unknown, but the first records appear more than 100 years ago.




In Meghalaya, the Khasi always care about protecting the natural environment.
