Experience in visiting the demilitarized zone between Korea and North Korea
Nearly 50 km north of the capital Seoul (South Korea), the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between South Korea and North Korea was established in 1953 thanks to the Korean War Armistice Agreement. Like a scar separating this peninsula into two regions, the DMZ is not only a venue for strategic political meetings but also a tourist attraction.
According to the Korea Tourism Organization, each year, the DMZ between Korea and North Korea welcomes more than 1
Barbed wire fences and military personnel make the DMZ between South Korea and North Korea become "haunted" and "ominous".
In 1993, when he visited this place, Bill Clinton called it "the scariest place on earth".
Simon Cockerell, chief executive of Koryo Tour (a business that organizes independent tours to North Korea), said Panmunji was the most visited area in the DMZ from both sides. Here, visitors can see the Military Demarcation Line and even cross it when inside the conference room.
On the Korean side, the atmosphere changes dramatically as tourists move from one location to another, from the tranquility at JSA to the bustling Dora Observatory. There's even a theme park built right in the Imjingak Nuri Peace Park just outside the DMZ.
In order to visit the DMZ between South Korea and North Korea, whichever side, tour guides must be booked with authorized tour companies Koryo Tours and Viator. Note, American visitors are prohibited from visiting Korea from September 1, 2017
North Korea has two main attractions: Panmunji and an observation area overlooking the South Korean anti-tank fence at the southern end of the treaty. On the Korean side, on the other hand, visitors can visit the DMZ and surrounding areas such as parks, observatories and museums.
Most first-time visitors here choose the route to visit the DMZ and JSA through Seoul, South Korea. This journey usually takes them to unfinished tunnels, Freedom Bridge, Nuri Peace Park, Dora Observatory and Odu Mountain Observatory.
Also known as Reunification Hill, Odu Mountain Observatory is one of the favorite destinations. Here, visitors can satisfy the need for sightseeing along the peninsula with a binoculars with 360-degree views. The image of Korea's modern cities in contrast to the untouched natural landscape on the Korean side will provide an enjoyable experience. Occasionally, visitors may come across silhouettes of graceful white cranes, even eagles, bears, deer or goats.
Some tours offer the opportunity to chat with or accompany those who fled from Korea to give visitors a better understanding of life in the northern peninsula. Regardless of which side you sign up for, you'll always be accompanied by guides and military escort. In addition, visitors must also sign a form in case things like neglect or getting lost in mines.
Regarding the code of conduct when visiting the DMZ, South Korea imposes stricter rules than North Korea. There are some mandatory rules like not wearing sandals, not wearing camouflage, torn shorts or jeans as well as not waving, signaling or taking pictures without permission.
Although the current situation on the Korean peninsula is quite optimistic, some experts believe the DMZ will not disappear anytime soon. According to Cockerell, the area has been around for decades. Removing the DMZ takes time despite a proposal to turn the DMZ into a nature reserve or a peace park.
He said if the situation continues to calm down, there is a possibility that the two countries will allow tourists and residents to access the area more deeply in the future. Cultural exchanges can improve humanitarian efforts to enhance the lives of the struggling North Korean people
