With colorful half-timbered houses running along the canal, Colmar is considered one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the world.
The ancient French town of Colmar
Nestled among the vineyards of the Vosges mountains in the Alsace region of northeastern France, Colmar is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns. Colmar is located about 70 km from the city of Strasbourg and bordered by Germany. The town is also on the main railway line from Strasbourg to Besel, Switzerland. . Historically, the town of Colmar was once owned by Sweden, Germany. During World War II, the surrounding areas were bombed and destroyed, but Colmar remained intact. The first attraction is Maison Adolph, the oldest architecture in town, built around 1350. House influenced by Gothic architecture, with pointed dome doors, has German style. The third floor and half-timbered walls in the roof were built in the 16th century. Photo: Roman Babakin.
Pfister house was built in 1537 and the owner is hunter Ludwig Scherer. Two-storey corner house, wood gallery, octagonal turret and murals represent biblical images. The "jewel" of the town is the Petit Venice district, known as the Little Venice of France. A short, calm canal flows through the neighborhood. The two sides of the canal are planted with trees and colorful flowers. Some buildings here date from the 14th century. There is a boat tour, sightseeing on the canal. Each trip lasts 25 minutes and the boat driver will give explanations and introduction about the history and story of the town. Sunset is when the town is most beautiful and peaceful; April - October is a good time to travel. The peak tourist season is from July to August because it coincides with Alsace's wine festival. The most common way to get to Colmar is by train.
