Monbetsu is a famous city that attracts tourists in northeastern Hokkaido (Japan) thanks to the icebergs drifting off the coast in the first months of a year. However, this year the tape has not appeared.

Although the icebergs, locally known as ryuhyo, have been present in the waters off the coast of Hokkaido, but no ice has appeared at the popular tourist destination Monbetsu in the early months of 2020.

According to the local Bureau of Meteorology, the reason why this year's iceberg has not appeared in Monbetsu is that the strong wind blew the icebergs into the Pacific Ocean, instead of drifting into this natural bay in northern Hokkaido. There are also other reasons why the ice hasn't appeared as usual.
“They say ice is getting less and less because of global warming. I am not sure what will happen when the icebergs disappear completely, because our tourism industry depends on the ice sheets at this time of year ”- Mr. Fumoto said.

Organizers of the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, which opens on February 4, 2020, have to transport tons of snow into downtown Sapporo, Hokkaido to create works of snow art.
