Life In The Coldest Place In The World In Covid-19
The coldest place on earth is still considered the “safest place in the world” thanks to the absence of a COV infection.
Life in Antarctica - the coldest place in the world in Covid-19
The most popular way for travelers to Antarctica is by boat. In Covid-19, many were worried that the coldest land in the world could have a case of infection, as yachts were considered major outbreaks. However, the virus has not been able to "set foot" on the frozen shores of this area. And now, as the Antarctic is entering the winter months, the sun is gone and people live mostly in the dark, the tours are unorganized, Covid-19 seems even less likely to have a chance to export
Winter in Antarctica lasts from March to October, outdoor temperatures minus 60 to minus 65 degrees Celsius, with August the coldest. Visitors cannot visit in winter because the area of ice doubles as compared to the remaining months, cruise ships cannot move

Except for penguins, whales, seals and seagulls, about 5,000 people live here. Most of them are scientists, researching at about 80 bases across the continent with the number of tourists coming and going to each com.
Keri Nelson, the administrative coordinator at the Palmer station on the island of Antwerp, the most distant US research station in Antarctica, is one of them. “We all want to go home, to be with our family during this period. But they all appreciate being able to live in a place where the disease doesn't appear, ”she said. Everyone here is still monitoring the situation of Covid-19 every day

Palmer Station used to receive thousands of tourists last season, but this year the number has decreased significantly because of the pandemic. Photo: CNN.
Nelson often shares his life in Antarctica on Instagram. She said that even when Covid-19 has not appeared and tourists still visit regularly, life here is no different from the self-isolation that Americans are doing. And life in self-isolation is often not easy. Nelson tried to find ways to entertain by thinking of work to do. But what she felt luckier than everyone else was that she was trapped in a beautiful place. Nelson's life is surrounded by many beautiful wildlife and nature.
However, she also sometimes feels sorry for being very far away and cannot accompany her family and loved ones during a pandemic.
Robert Taylor, 29, from Scotland is a field guide, assisting scientists in conducting research. He is staying at the Rothera research station, a British survey facility on the island of Adelaide, off the west coast of Antarctica.
Taylor said initially not too concerned about the pandemic when he learned it had just spread in China. After that, a few cases appeared in the UK and now it is becoming one of the biggest outbreaks in the world. Currently, Taylor is quite worried about relatives at home, especially his grandmother. Referring to the fact that from Antarctica monitoring Covid-19 at home, Taylor said: “It was like being on the moon and looking down. We can see what is happening, but observe it from a very distant place.
Taylor says people in Antarctica continue with their old lives, as if unaware of Covid-19. People still go to the practice room, the music room, the library, the movie theater ..., things that people on other continents might be missing out on because of the social exclusion, blockade.
Everyone told Taylor he would change after just one season in Antarctica. But Taylor argues that when Covid-19 happened, the rest of the world changed as well. In the photo, scientists and researchers in the South Pole are chatting with each other in their spare time.

Taylor, Nelson and others will also return home after finishing their time working in Antarctica. But they know that they will be greeted by another world. Things will not be the same, as when they began to leave brought by Covid-19. They will have to get used to a way of life that has only been seen from afar. The seemingly simple things that they usually do in Antarctica can become a distant memory when they come home.
Tourism has grown steadily in Antarctica in recent years, and cruise ships often bring tourists to visit. According to the Antarctic Tour Operators Association, about 56,100 tourists visited the continent during the 2018-2019 season, up 40% from previous years.
They are expected to welcome 78,500 visitors during the 2019-2020 season (the tourist season in Antarctica usually starts from November to the end of March). However, the research stations here began to restrict many tourists' visits from the beginning of the year, because of Covid-19. After a cruise ship carrying Australian and New Zealand passengers was about to dock with Covid-19 infections, the tours here were completely halted.
