Mystery where thousands of birds commit suicide in India
Every September - October, when the monsoon ends, the birds in Jatinga - a small village on the mountainside of Dima Hasao district (Assam state), start to behave abnormally. Specifically, on moonless nights, especially between 18:00 and 21:30, hundreds of birds of 44 species become completely disoriented. They repeatedly crashed into light poles, buildings and trees like mass suicide.
Hundreds of colorful birds of 44 species usually fly back to Jatinga in September and October every year
After falling to the ground severely injured, they can starve to death after a few days or be slaughtered by villagers. They often throw stones or stab animals with bamboo stakes, claiming they are bad spirits, sent by demons to harm the village
It is estimated that thousands of birds have died over the past 100 years.
The phenomenon of bird suicide or "avian harakiri" is thought to have occurred in 1905, when villagers first discovered birds behaving strangely around light sources. In the years that followed, artificial lights and natural conditions indirectly created their own cycle of suicide.
In the 1960s, Indian naturalist Edward Pritchard Gee and falconist Salim Ali began to explore the mystery of birds in Jatinga. This event attracted the attention of global scientists. One theory is that the combination of high altitude, high winds and fog causes birds to lose their way. In addition, the light of the village attracted them
Interestingly, there are no long-distance migratory birds that are attracted to light traps.
The "victims" of bird suicide come from the adjacent valley in the north. They migrate to other lands due to the influence of monsoons. However, they were stranded and only landed in a fixed 1.5 km long, 200 m wide strip of land in the village. The light poles in the south do not attract any birds.
After all the research, the reason these birds form the habit of flying here and being stuck for hundreds of years is still unknown. The Wildlife Conservation Society of India went to Jatinga to educate the people about bird conservation, instead of attracting and killing them. Since then, the number of dead birds has been reduced by 40%.
Bird suicide gradually attracts wildlife researchers and tourists to the village. To promote tourism, since 2010, the local government has held a three-full moon Jatinga bird festival with local cultural activities.
Jatinga is a mountainous village in Dima Hasao district, Assam state, India. This is the residence of the Zeme Nagas tribe. Guwahati's nearest airport is about 350 km from the village. To get here, visitors can travel by train station to Haflong town, 15 minutes by car from Jatinga.
Upon arrival at Haflong, visitors can visit the Haflong natural lake, Panimoor waterfall and visit the churches and chapels in Muolhoi village.
