Portugal’s Most Special Stone Village

Located on the high mountain Serra da Estrela is Monsanto, the most beautiful and special small village in Portugal, where people build houses and live in large rocks.

According to historical records, Monsanto village was built centuries ago, was once considered the central land of Portugal from 1.174 to 19 century.

To reach the village, visitors need to go through a small road through the valley. Looking up from below the mountain, the village of Monsanto looms over red roofs among the low trees

Catching the eyes of visitors are beautiful little houses hidden among large rocks. Small roads crept in the rock.

Monsanto currently covers an area of 131 76 km² and has nearly 1,000 inhabitants.



The village still retains its most unique ancient architecture in the world, almost unchanged over hundreds of years.
Some of the houses were chiseled completely in rocks weighing up to 200 tons. Others use stone as a roof or wall. Some other houses take advantage of the crevices of the rocks to create living space inside.

The houses here amaze visitors with their uniqueness and beauty from the combination, blending of Manueline architecture, which is synthetic in the 16th century.
Some houses have doors and roofs in the style of modern Portuguese architecture.

Another special thing is that there are ruins of an ancient fortress, which serves as a refuge for Lusitania residents

The village was voted "The Only Portuguese Village in Portugal" in a national poll in 1938.




Since then, Monsanto has become a tourist attraction, with its quirky architectural beauty and wonderful views that stretch out endlessly into the countryside of Portugal.
The government also restricted the construction to protect the inherent beauty of the village.

Due to the mountainous terrain and narrow narrow roads weaving around large rocks, the main means of transportation of the people here is donkeys.
