President Thomas Jefferson's face was originally designed on the right side of President Washington. Later, the workers found that the stone on Washington's right was too weak to be sculpted, so they were forced to move the statue of Thomas Jefferson to the left. Each statue of the US President's head on Mount Rushmore is 18 meters high with a nose about 6.4 meters high, 3.4 meters wide eyes and 5.5 meters wide mouth. Roosevelt was famous for his image of glasses, so Borglum put this detail in the sculpture.




The sculpture on Mount Rushmore is truly unfinished. The original design of the work included the presidents' bodies. Architect Borglum died before the project was completed and funding ran out, so only the head of each president was carved.
