Struggling winter of homeless people in the coldest part of Siberia
The city of Omsk, located in southwestern Siberia, has one of the longest and harshest winters in the world. The temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius from November to around March. According to Accuweather, in the coldest month, the temperature can drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius. Currently, the city has about 3,500 homeless people, although this number is expected to be much higher

. When the cold came, many people were unprotected. Reuters photojournalist Alexey Malgavko visited Omsk, Siberia to document how the homeless survived the long and cold winter in this extremely harsh land.

On collecting bottles, night staying at the water pipe
To survive the freezing cold during the winter months, many in the homeless community of Omsk sleep under industrial pipes with hot water for heating

The pipes contain hot water, used to heat local buildings.

However, sleeping there is quite dangerous. If they stay close to the pipe for too long, they run the risk of serious burns, but if they stay too far, they run the risk of freezing during the night. Some people are even creative in trying to find warm places to sleep, for example, a temporary shelter inside an underground tube chamber. Many people drink alcohol to stay as warm as possible.
Sometimes, they don't realize the skin is being burned by hot pipes because of the warm feeling when drinking large amounts of alcohol. Some Omsk homeless people try to make money by collecting recyclable trash and sending them to distribution centers in exchange for a small amount. They spend all day searching for aluminum cans or plastic bottles in the trash cans, then bring them to recycling centers and receive money depending on weight
The money they earn gives them enough to live a few days.

Charity activities for the homeless
Omsk has a shelter for the overnight homeless but is centrally located in the city and many choose not to go there. Meanwhile, local charities strive to help the homeless community of more than 3,500 people. The local branch of Caritas, the global Catholic charity, gives them food and clothes. Caritas also gives homeless people health checks. During Christmas, the charity even performs, distributes food and gifts.
