Terraced Wells Are Nearly 1,000 Years Old

Rani Ki Vav is an 11th-century ladder well in Patan town, Gujurat state, on the banks of the Saraswati River. This monument was built by Queen Udayamati as a memorial to her late husband, King Bhimdev I (1022-1063). Bhimdev I was the son of Mularaja, the founder of the Solaki dynasty in Patan city.
In the 13th century, the ladder well relic was buried by the Saraswati river until 1980, when it was unearthed by archaeologists

. After the restoration, the carvings of Rani Ki Vav are still almost intact. In 2014, this place was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
From the ground, Rani Ki Vav's symmetrical steps lead down to an underground well All are kept intact by the alluvial layer during the Saraswati River flood seven centuries ago.

The Rani Ki Vav is a testament to the ladder well, an underground water storage system invented by the Indians in the 3rd millennium BC. Originally, these systems were simple earth holes. Over time, they are gradually built into complex and multi-story works of art.
By the time the Rani Ki Vav was made, the craftsmen were at their pinnacle with their skill in building wells. The Maru-Gurjara architectural style is reflected through the subtle sculptural lines in every detail and proportion.
Rani Ki Vav was designed as an inverted temple to accentuate water's reverence This monument has a total of 7 floors of stairs and sculptural walls of high artistic value.




The monument has more than 500 main sculptures and about a thousand small works. All of them portray religious, mythological and secular images.
On the bottom floor of the well, a gate leads to a 30-kilometer tunnel to the town of Sidhpur near Patan. The path is an escape route for the king to lose. However, the bunker was blocked by rocks and mud.
The ruins are open from 8 to 18 hours daily. Admission fee for foreign visitors is 2 USD (46,000 VND). The nearest airport to Patan is in the city of Ahmedabad.



From here, it takes 3.5 hours by bus. Jeeps are also a popular vehicle, but not very comfortable.
