In 1971, construction workers in Hunan accidentally found the tomb of a woman with her husband and son. The tomb was so large that the excavation was underway for almost a year with more than 1,500 local volunteers. The identity of the mummy that was later discovered was Tan Truyen Lady or the Great Lady, the wife of a marquis who ruled this land about 2,200 years ago during the Han dynasty.

When unearthed, Tan Truyi's tomb contained more than 1,000 precious antiques such as gold and silver statues, a collection of silk dresses, cosmetics, musical instruments, lacquerware, and finely crafted household items.
Willow Weilan Hai Chang, director of the China Exhibition Institute in New York City (USA), said that these items show that Tan Truyen used to have a luxurious life, and wished that everything would not change when it turned out the other side.




In particular, the body of Tan Truyen Lady is wrapped in 18 layers of silk and linen, placed in four interlocking coffins in decreasing size. To prevent air and water from entering, the tomb was covered with coal and the top was sealed with clay. Such an enclosed space has the effect of suppressing bacteria and preserving mummies. In addition, archaeologists also found traces of mercury in the coffin and a slightly acidic liquid around her body.

Tan Truyen's autopsy was carried out in December 1972 It shows that this woman passed away when she was 50 years old.



Although the mummy's face was disfigured, the mummy's skin was smooth, with no signs of muscle spasm. Even the arms and legs can still be folded and stretched. Scientists have determined that Tan Truyen has blood type A through what remains in the larynx and internal organs are intact.
The Lady's body has the most complete autopsy record of the ancient mummies. Scientists can reconstruct the sumptuous diets and living habits as well as the hunting, manufacturing and processing methods of food from more than 2,000 years ago.
When she was alive, Lady Dai often enjoyed dishes reserved for the nobility such as venison, lamb and fruit. Because of that, Tan Truy's small skeleton was warped by obesity, she could only walk by walking stick. The habit of being sedentary also causes hardening of the arteries, diabetes and a number of other ailments in the spine.

The excavation of the marquis' family graves is considered one of the great archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. How her body was able to resist decomposition remains a secret so far. The mummies were buried in an airtight environment, the same water as the shogun and her son could not be preserved.
Today, the Lady's mummy is on display in the Hunan Museum. Here, visitors can also admire 180,000 other artifacts, including bronze of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, pottery, porcelain, calligraphy works, paintings over the period.
