The town of Longyearbyen is the fastest warming in the world
Longyearbyen is located on the remote island of Svalbard, Norway, at 78 degrees north. This place is located between the mainland of Norway and the Arctic, with 2,300 inhabitants. On 2/3, the Guardian reported: this is the fastest warming town in the world.

Researchers have long predicted that rising temperatures and changing weather due to climate change will first occur in the Arctic, and spread south. This can be seen in Svalbard, climate scientist Ketil Isaksen of the Norwegian Institute of Meteorology: “We are witnessing such dramatic changes. Since 1961, the rate of warming in the island has increased five times the global average ”. In March 2019, this place set a record for 100 consecutive months of above normal temperatures.
“Our place in the world presents challenges, but also a great opportunity,” said Arild Olsen, mayor of Longyearbyen.
When the sun sets on October 5 every year, the people in the town will not see this scene until the next 155 days, which is until March 8 next year
Much of that time, the town was in darkness.

During the dark winter, lacking sunlight, many residents of Longyearbyen are afraid to stay indoors. Bente Næverdal, a local resident, said they had good reason to be scared. In December 2015, an avalanche in Mount Sukkertoppen killed two people, destroying 11 homes. In February 2017, another avalanche destroyed 6 more homes.

Since 2018, the government has spent 500 million kroner (more than 53.7 million USD) on housing protection measures for residents such as creating avalanche barriers, building new houses.

The government built 60 new houses about 500 meters northeast of the town, in a safer area and not on a mountain slope. The next phase, the government will destroy 142 homes located in areas believed to be life-threatening. According to Bente Næverdal, this is the largest house construction program in this area by the Norwegian government.
Approximately 300,000 visitors visit Svalbard each year. Most visitors go to the town of Longyearbyen, which is just 1,050 km from the North Pole, in winter for a chance to see the auroras and polar bears. These are the town's most attractive highlights with tourists.
Marije Bocsh, a female tourist shared, this place is like a dream destination. There are so many things to explore and each day you experience different.

Like Marije, most of the tourists do not know the town is threatened by unpredictable avalanches, which can endanger lives and property.
The "clue" that reminds you of these threats is the avalanche fences built on the side of the mountain, above the houses. The highest barrier on the mountain is a galvanized steel structure, 10 meters high and 200 meters long. The second and third fence is between Sukkertoppen and above the town center.

Nverdal, who lives just below the barrier, says he feels safe. However, the barriers cannot extend all the way to the valley below Mount Sukkertoppen because the slopes are too steep.

That means, hundreds of residents are unprotected, and forced to leave their homes every winter.
The town of Longyearbyen is a small coal mine on the island of Spitsbergen, in the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard. The most common way to get here is a 3-hour flight from the capital Oslo to Longyearbyen Airport located at the most northern point of the world. If you want to come by boat, you can buy a tour to join an ocean adventure, lasting from 9 to 14 days. In Vietnam, there are many flights to Olso. Vietnamese tourists must apply for a Schengen visa to enter Norway.
