Byodoin in Japanese means Equality Institute, built by the ruler Minamoto no Shigenobu in 988 in the Heian period. After his death, the very powerful and wealthy Fujiwara family at that time bought this project. Regent Fujiwara no Yorimichi transformed his father's legacy into a Buddhist temple in 1052
The architecture with the temple surrounded by a lake has become the foundation for many Buddhist works after the Heian period.

So what's in the Byodoin population that makes this place so noticeable? The answer comes from a timeless, intact wooden structure named Amida-do (Hall of worship of Buddha Shakyamuni), also known by a more popular name Hoo-do (Phoenix Hall) . Included in the list of Japan's national treasures, this is the site in the region that is most intact. Meanwhile, the surrounding towers and monasteries were burned during the civil war of 1336.
Surviving through the smoke and fire of war and thousand years of history, Phuong Hoang hall still stands, shining in the surrounding blue lake. The space here changes according to four seasons, blending together to create a calm and pure Buddha land.
When you step foot on the temple's main hall, the whole area of worship appears with the Phoenix hall and the two chambers radiating to the sides like wings of a bird extending, soaring to the sky The pair of brilliant gold-plated phoenixes at the top of the pagoda in the north-south is part of the origin of the name of the Phoenix Hall that people of the Edo period often use and circulate until today.




The pagoda with curved roof, the main hall is the majestic Buddha statue, the whole building is surrounded by a lake as if it evokes the image of the bliss region. The Buddha statue in the main hall is said to have reached the pinnacle of temple architecture at that time and was the inspiration for later Buddhist works across Japan.

Treasures at Byoudoin
A UNESCO World Heritage Site (1994) and a National Treasure (1951), Byoudoin will sweep you along the path right from the entrance. The treasure in the Phuong Hoang hall is the Amida Buddha statue meditating on a lotus made of wood and gilded outside. Unlike the famous Dong Dai Tu temple in the ancient capital of Nara, where the Great Buddha rises to the roof and has to cast bronze statues first before building the temple, the Buddha statue at Byodoin is built in a completely different way. Because it was impossible to find a block of wood large enough, Jocho, a famous Heian sculptor, used many pieces of wood (yosegi) to form a 2.



4 m high Buddha image. It is also the only remaining Buddha statue made by Mr. Jocho to this day. The perfection of the figure has been the basis and model for many Buddha statues since the Heian period.
Located to the east, every early morning, the temple lobby welcomes the pristine sunshine of the new day and when the afternoon comes, the red, gray-roofed architecture resting on the yellow-orange sky of sunset. At that time, the lights were lit in the Phoenix hall, and behind the wooden "curtain" with a round hole was the face of the benevolent Buddha looking down to the world.
Byodoin museum in the temple complex brings visitors closer to the national treasures that are preserved here. Opened in 1965 and renovated for the third time in 2001, the evocative space with tunnel-like entrance leads to a video display showing the overview of Byodoin.



Do not hesitate to take a few minutes to listen and feel through valuable images and information before admiring each object close-up. The temple bell, which was used to alarm the clock from nearly 1,000 years ago, was placed behind a glass cage. The 26 wooden carved bodhisattvas ride on the clouds, some are dancing, some hold a musical instrument or put their hands in prayer, each face has a "god". All are displayed solemnly with a somewhat mysterious light.

Located in the center of the museum is a pair of original phoenixes removed from the top of the temple roof and preserved in a glass frame. The traces of time appearing on the feathers and the bronze body exude the attraction for the bird statue, which is a symbol of virtue, grace and elegance in Eastern culture.
