Chukchi or Chukchee is a tribe living in the Chukotka peninsula, an autonomous region in northeastern Siberia. This is the region with the harshest natural conditions in Russia. In winter, temperatures can drop to -50 degrees Celsius, due to wind blowing in from the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea. Currently, the tribe's population is about 150,000 people

The Chukchi people lived in the tundra before the Christian era. They call themselves Luoraveti, meaning true people. Unlike other indigenous groups in Siberia, Chukchi was not subdued by the army in the 17th century By the 1930s, the tribe had to join the state-controlled economic collectives.

Living conditions of the Chukchi people
Traditionally, the Chukchi tribe divided into two main groups by occupation: living in the peninsula's interior and the group living along the coast. The inland Chukchi people live in a nomadic form, reindeer blankets, and live in tents. The traditional house of the Chukchi reindeer blanket is yaranga, conical or round. Inside the bedroom is a bed made of animal hair for many people. Today, they have gradually moved away from tents, to live in bungalows and old apartment buildings. Traditionally, the Chukchi people used dog sled, reindeer and leather boats to transport goods. In parallel with the traditional mode of transportation, people have added motorbikes and sleds.
The main foods of the Chukchi people are boiled venison, secretory soup, reindeer brain and bone marrow. People in the coastal areas often eat boiled seal meat, whale meat, and seaweed. There are also frozen fish and plant roots.



In a more modern life, the food has been added with vegetables, canned meat, bread and processed foods.
Previously, the tribe was not exposed to medicine, due to a lack of medicinal plants and minerals. Chukchi people do not have immune systems to diseases, so it is easy to spread smallpox and flu. Their average life expectancy is 45 years.
Tribal cultural life
Due to the harsh climate and difficult life of the tundra, the members of the community have to depend and help each other. Hospitality and generosity are qualities that are highly respected among the Chukchi people. They are not allowed to refuse to help others, even strangers, who are having difficulty with accommodation, lack of food. The community will take care of orphans, widows and the poor.



Stingy, selfishness is considered the worst for them.
In the family, men do jobs such as hunting, fishing, and collecting firewood. And women clean and repair yaranga tents, cook, sew, and repair clothes. Today's Chukchi children go to elementary and middle school boarding schools. In addition to the traditional language, they learn to read and write in Russian.

The traditional clothes of the Chukchi tribe are kerker, knee-length robes made from reindeer skin, fox fur, wolf.



Women have additional robe-like dresses, decorated with beads, embroidery and fur decorations. Both sexes wear high shoes and leather lingerie.
People developed a folk art form of carving and carvings on animal bones. The traditional themes are daily life landscapes such as hunting, reindeer herding, peninsula animals. However, only men do the sculpture work, while women sew and embroider.
The Chukchi clan believes that animals, plants, celestial bodies, rivers, and forests all have their own souls. They created folk legends about the creation of the earth, moon, sun, and stars. Some stories tell about evil spirits that cause illness and misfortune.




Every year, the tribe holds rituals, allowing the mage to converse with spirits and predict the future. There are also summer and autumn sacrifices performed by the coastal Chukchi and the reindeer shepherd.
Today, more and more people are leaving the tribe, to settle down in towns and find jobs and houses. Their lifestyle is also threatened by problems of exploitation and pollution caused by industry. According to the latest statistics in 2015, only about 1,000 reindeer shepherds maintain their traditional lifestyles.
