Wolfgat, a small beach restaurant in a remote South African fishing village, became famous globally, winning at the World Restaurant Awards held in Paris, France.

The awards ceremony took place on February 18 (local time) based on the results of the votes of chefs, restaurants, gourmet and restaurant critics around the world.
Wolfgat restaurant opened two years ago, at a 130-year-old house in the fishing village of Parentoster, Tay Cap province, southwest South Africa.

Chef Van der Merwe says that in addition to the subtle spices in traditional Cape Malay local cooking, his motto is "intervene as little as possible in the dish, keeping the ingredients fresh."

Van der Merwe only started to cook seriously at the age of 30, opening a restaurant Wolfgat with only 6 female staff who had never been trained.

The World Restaurant Awards jury includes 50 male culinary experts and 50 female culinary experts. The awards also included other award categories such as Tattooless Chef of the Year, to French culinary legend Alain Ducasse among many other awards.
