Visit a museum
One of the richest merchants in Matsumoto City is Sakai Yoshiaki

. With his enormous money, he started collecting works of art and woodblock prints.
Over time, his descendants continued to do this collection until they kept more than 100,000 pieces.
Arguably, this is one of the largest private art collections in the world A part of this impressive collection can be seen at the Japanese Ukiyoe Museum.



Entrance fee is 1,200 yen (about 245,000 VND), open from 10am to 5pm.
You can go from Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line, get off at Oniwa station then walk 15 to 20 minutes to reach the museum.
Another interesting museum you should visit is the Museum of Art. It displays the artwork of one of the world famous artists, Yayoi Kusama because Matsumoto City is where she was born.
Admission is 410 yen for adults (about 83,000 VND), and is open from 9am to 5pm. From Matsumoto Station, it takes about 12 minutes to walk to the museum.

Soba is a type of Japanese buckwheat noodle and Matsumoto city is famous for this dish. Don't confuse soba noodles with ramen (thin noodles) and udon (thick noodles).
Also, don't forget to enjoy oyaki, a local specialty. These are steamed dumplings made from buckwheat flour, filled with vegetables, meat, or beans. Oyaki dumplings are sold in almost every food store in the city.

Attend the festival
Matsumoto is a vibrant city with dozens of festivals going on throughout the year.



Some of the most unique events you should experience include:
Ofune Festival (May): This is one of the oldest local festivals in which people will parade on the streets carrying wooden boat frames. It is said that this festival was held to remind the Azumi-zoku, a group of old seafaring people who migrated centuries ago.

Taiko Drum Festival (July): An event taking place at Matsumoto Castle, in which performing groups from all over Japan gather to play taiko, a traditional Japanese drum type.
Matsumoto Bon-Bon (August): Festival to pay homage to the ancestors of Japan.
Matsumoto Ice Sculpture Festival (January): Ice sculptors from all over the world flock to Matsumoto Castle to perform their works overnight.

Thanks to its prime location, there is a lot you can explore near Japan Matsumoto city.
Tateyama Kurobe Expressway: Known as "The Hill of Japan", this 90km long road passes through Mt. Tateyama.




You will pass through a variety of stops on different vehicles such as buses, cable cars or trains. The stop at the highest point is Murodo Station (2,450 meters high).

Kamikochi: About 3 hours from Nagoya city by car, Kamikochi is a typical scenic spot of Chubu Sangaku National Park.

The park is open all year round, but if you want the best photos, come between January and February, when the park is covered in white snow.
