Located in South America, the Amazon River is one of the longest rivers in the world. “Its” champion is not yet recognized by the world, although a group of Brazilian and Peruvian scientists once claimed the Amazon River is 6,800 km long, 105 km longer than the Nile (6,695 km), according to National Geographic in 2007.

Without: a bridge.
Build bridges for anyone
Starting from upstream in the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon is the longest river in the world without a bridge. The 25 million people living on the riverside, from remote villages to bustling cities in Brazil, Peru or Colombia, have one thing in common: to cross the river, you have to take a boat or take a ferry.

Throughout its length, Amazon is nowhere too narrow or too wide to bridge - during the dry season. But during the rainy season, the river level rises more than 9 meters, and the 4 8-kilometer stretches can turn 48 kilometers in a few weeks.



The soft silt deposited on both sides of the banks is constantly eroding, the riverbed is often filled with rubble - including floating patches of forest called matupás that sometimes reach up to 4 hectares. Amazon's rainy season really brings nightmares to construction engineers.
However, the real reason for the absence of bridges is simple: The Amazon Basin has very few roads to connect with the bridges. In addition to several major cities, the population of the jungle is sparsely populated and the river itself is a highway for the people of the area. Macapá, located on the northern bank of the Amazon River Delta, is a city inhabited by half a million people, but without a single road connecting the rest of Brazil. If you rent a car there, you have only one direction to drive north, to the overseas French territory of Guiana.

The first bridge
For many years now, the water traffic between Manaus, Brazil and the nearby town of Iranduba has been congested with busy ferries. Ferry tickets cost about 30 USD per passenger.
In 2010, the Brazilian government built a cable-stayed bridge between the two cities. Technically, this bridge does not cross the mainstream of the Amazon, but over a tributary of its largest, the Rio Negro. Therefore, this is the first bridge of the Amazon river system, people are very happy when this project inaugurated. However, environmentalists are not sympathetic to Manaus's new bridge or the highway project, because these works are the first step in developing Amazon - in parallel with deforestation.
