Introduction Of Stillbirth

What is stillbirth?
Stillbirth is a fetus that dies after 24 weeks of pregnancy.
If the fetus dies before 24 weeks, it is considered as a miscarriage.
Pregnancy is quite common. There are more than 3,600 stillbirths each year in the UK and for every 200 babies born there is a stillbirth. In the UK, 11 babies die before birth each day, 15 times more than sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

.
Cause of stillbirth
About half of all stillbirths are associated with placental complications. For some reason the placenta is not working properly (the placenta is the organ that supplies blood and nourishes the fetus).
About 10% of stillbirths have congenital malformations
A very small percentage of stillbirths are related to maternal health, such as pre-eclampsia, or other problems including umbilical cord injuries or infection.

Introduction Of Stillbirth

What happens when an unborn baby dies?
If a suspected fetus is suspected, a manual Doppler or ultrasound can be used to check the fetal heart rate.
If the fetus is dead, there will be no immediate immediate complication, and the woman will usually have time to consider the option of treatment thereafter. Pregnant women can choose to wait for labor naturally or to take medication.
If the condition of the woman is not good, the fetus should be given as soon as possible. Rarely, stillbirths are taken out by cesarean section.
At this stage, most parents will ask why their child died. The doctor can give the woman some basic information about the tests to find the cause

Postpartum stillbirth
Finding the cause of a stillbirth can ease pain and provide more information if the woman wants to continue to be pregnant, so she will be assigned tests to find the cause.

Introduction Of Stillbirth

The doctor will discuss the test results and autopsy (if the woman agrees) during the follow-up visit every few weeks after birth. Pregnant women can be counseled about the risks of their next pregnancy.
Help and support
Stillbirths and late miscarriage can leave a shock to couples and can adversely affect family members, including children and mothers.
Women may feel better about sharing their feelings with a doctor, midwife, public health care provider or other parents who have lost a baby.
Can prophylaxis prevent pregnancy?
Not all pregnancies can be prevented. However, some measures can be taken to minimize the risk of stillbirth, such as:
Stop smoking.
Avoid the use of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy - this can seriously affect fetal development and increase the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth.
Adequate antenatal examination to monitor fetal growth and health.
