Applying New Technology To Treat Cancer For The First Time

Pediatricians in collaboration with cardiologists successfully operated the inferior vena cava segment and removed a tumor for 5-year-old Hoang Van Truong with kidney cancer.

Tumor biopsy revealed that he had recurrent kidney cancer with a high degree of malignancy, requiring chemotherapy. Economic conditions are difficult, the family belongs to the poor household of Nghe An, but Truong's parents are determined to treat their children until the end.
In order to create conditions for the school's children to continue receiving chemical treatment, the medical staff of the oncology department and the social work department of the Central Children's Hospital mobilized and sought funding from the Run for Children Fund. and philanthropists.
After chemotherapy, the tumor size decreased markedly. Doctors determine that the chance of recovery remains if the baby is surgically removed (including the infiltrated lower vena cava segment) and combined postoperative radiotherapy. After a general consultation among specialties: Oncology, Surgery, Anesthesia, External resuscitation, Imaging, Pathology, the doctors decided to surgery to remove the tumor and replace the damaged artery
Determining this is a difficult surgery, very few cancer treatment centers in developing countries can do it and the patient can die on the operating table, the National Hospital of Pediatrics invited Dr.



Duong Duc Hung, Head of Cardiology Department of the National Heart Institute for technical assistance. On February 9, Dr. Hung and surgeons at the Central Children's Hospital successfully removed the entire tumor and replaced the damaged lower aortic segment. Two weeks after the operation, Truong was discharged from the hospital in stable health. Currently, pediatric patients continue to receive radiation therapy according to the regimen.
