Divorced People Are Susceptible To Heart Disease
New US research shows that divorced people are at a higher risk of heart attack than groups of the same age who are maintaining marriage.
The study, published in the journal Circulation, argues that the chronic stress caused by divorce has long-term effects on a person's overall health. The scientists analyzed survey data from 15,827 people, showing that women are most severely affected by family problems, especially divorce. It is almost impossible for them to get rid of the stress before they remarry.
Most of us know that the death of a loved one can significantly increase the risk of a heart attack in others. Now, a research team from Duke University has shown the same effect that a broken marriage can have on heart disease.
During the 18-year study, from 1992 to 2010, nearly one third of the total 15,827 participants broke their marriage at least once
. This figure rises to 77% among those who divorce multiple times. For men, the risk of a heart attack increases only 10% when getting divorced once and 30% after multiple divorces.
Professor Linda George, a member of the research team, said: "The risk of a heart attack caused by a marriage failure is roughly equivalent to the risk from high blood pressure or diabetes. The situation becomes more serious if the marriage breaks down many times. This shows that the divorce issue has quite a serious impact on health ”. Playing with a tablet can help reduce the risks posed by high blood pressure, while there seems to be no tangible solution to alleviate the trauma of divorce
Professor George explained on the BBC that: "We all know that psychological stress will cause constant stress in the immune system, increase the risk of inflammation, while increasing levels of stress hormones.
The immune function is changed in a bad way, if it lasts for many years, it will inevitably lead to physiological damage ".
Depression is also linked to the gender difference, she said. For women, divorce becomes a more serious psychological burden than men. When remarried, the risks of chronic stress slightly decreased for women, while the risk for men continued to increase. "I think this is the most interesting detail in the research results", Professor George added.
In another angle, Professor Jeremy Pearson, from the British Heart Health Foundation, commented: “Neurological health has been shown to affect cardiovascular health. The above study shows that divorce can increase the risk of heart attack, but the results are not really convincing. We need more evidence before concluding that divorce is a serious risk factor for a heart attack.
Through this, the British Heart Health Fund called for more research to have more evidence confirming divorce is the cause of heart disease or not. In the short term, researchers recommend that those experiencing a broken marriage should seek support from relatives and friends to avoid stress that affects their health badly.
