Hazard For Young Children

Most children are infected with Rotavirus at least once before the age of 5. Every year, rotavirus acute diarrhea kills more than 600,000 children worldwide and the rate of child deaths from this disease is very high in developing countries. Rotavirus quickly attacks the young immature digestive system, causing diarrhea, vomiting and leading to rapid dehydration and death if not rehydrated promptly.
This virus can survive for a long time in the environment and is resistant to common detergents such as alcohol, Javel water, so it is highly contagious. Rotavirus is mainly transmitted by the way of stool, mouth and hands. They are excreted in the faeces of children and survive for days on the surface of objects around the child such as furniture, floors, toys, household items.
The smaller the child, the more severe the disease
Babies 3 - 24 months of age are subject to the strongest Rotavirus attack.

Hazard For Young Children

The risk of infection in young children is very high because they tend to suck their hands and still do not know how to wash their hands.
The symptoms
In the typical case, when infected with Rotavirus young children have a fever, fuss and then intense vomiting and diarrhea. Vomiting and diarrhea may be up to 20 times a day, watery stools often, there may be bloody sputum.
Because children vomiting and diarrhea several times a day, the body is easily dehydrated and hospitalized for treatment. The illness usually lasts from 3 to 9 days but it may take up to three weeks to recover. If not treated promptly and appropriately rehydration, the child will lose severe dehydration, acidosis or even death. After the illness, children are at risk of malnutrition despite having appropriate nutrition support.
Treatment and prevention
Antibiotics are not effective against acute rotavirus diarrhea.

Hazard For Young Children

Treatment is mainly for the prevention of dehydration, oral rehydration and proper nutrition. Because children have diarrhea and vomiting several times a day, rehydration by oral administration is often difficult. In these cases, the child must be hospitalized for intravenous fluids.
Rotavirus diarrhea is a highly contagious disease that cannot be prevented by normal measures such as proper hand washing, clean water supply or improved sanitation.
The good news is that vaccines are now available to prevent Rotavirus diarrhea. Because the disease is most common and most severe in very young children, children need to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
Parents with children under 6 months of age should see a doctor immediately from the first visit at obstetric hospitals, pediatrics or district preventive medicine centers for advice on how to prevent vaccinations for their children. from the unpredictable consequences of Rotavirus.
