Atrial septal defect is a congenital heart disease, it usually has no symptoms from childhood to middle age.
Symptoms of the disease appear depending on the size and location of the atrial septal opening. Most patients with small or moderate vents do not have symptoms.
Cases of large ventricular atrial fibrillation can cause difficulty breathing or heart failure. Atrial septal defect leads to a large right ventricle, a pulmonary artery, and can be seen and felt.
Examining the heart in the second and third intercostal spaces, next to the breastbone, systolic murmur can be heard

X-ray revealed right atrial and right ventricle thick, large pulmonary artery increased.

Electrocardiograms and ultrasound can detect the disease.
Treatment: patients with small vents may be in normal health, without surgery. If the patient has large atrial interstitial holes, often cause complications after 40 years such as: pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmia (especially atrial fibrillation), heart failure ...
Treatment must be closed surgery. Thus, whether the disease is dangerous or not depends on the size of the vent
You should take your wife for medical examination and treatment at the cardiovascular hospital.
