"The rubbish left by the climbers on the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is the cause of environmental pollution, putting the epidemic in danger of spreading", Nepal climbing association president Ang Tshering Tuesday / 3 says.
“Every climbing season, more than 700 people, including guides and climbers, live for nearly two months in the mountains, leaving a large amount of faeces and urine. This issue has not been resolved, ”said Ang Tshering

. He also said that the government of Nepal needs to speak up for climbers to properly dispose of waste and preserve the pristine beauty of the mountain.
The climbing season usually starts from early March until the end of May, attracting hundreds of foreign tourists to Nepal. Last year's climbing season was canceled after 16 local instructors were killed in an avalanche in April

Climbers spend weeks adapting to the climate and staying around 4 camps set up on the slopes, the lowest at 5,300m from the foothill and the highest at 8,850m.

Each camp has tents and necessary equipment, however they do not have toilets.
"Climbers often dig holes in the snow to go to the toilet and throw trash," says Tshering. "Garbage and waste keep piling up for many years around 4 camps".
In the lowest camp, there are many trash cleaners, chefs and waiters, with toilets and trash cans. When full, the waste bin is moved to a lower area for treatment.
Dawa Steven Sherpa, who has led the Everest clean-up team since 2008, said some climbers carry disposable toilet bags for use on higher camps. "It is a health hazard and it needs to be addressed immediately," he said

“The Nepal government has not had a plan yet to tackle the problem of human waste.

But starting this year's climbing season, the staff of the mountain range will be closely monitoring the garbage issue in the mountains, ”said Puspa Raj Katuwal, Nepal's government's mountain climbing operation manager.
Last year, the government introduced a new regulation, requiring each climber to bring down 8 kg of trash at the end of their trekking journey, which is the estimated amount of trash each person emits during the climb. The mountain team has to deposit $ 4,000 for compliance with the regulations, Katuwal said.
In 1953, Edmund Hillary, New Zealander, became the first person to conquer Mount Everest. Since then, more than 4,000 people step by step set foot on the highest mountain in the world.
